What is Fonart?
The Fondo Nacional para el Fomento de las Artesanias (The Nacional Fund for the Development of the Crafts), FONART, was created as an answer to the necessity of promoting the domestic artisan activity. FONART carries out different activities with the purpose of impelling, inside its competitive environment, the productive social development and the opening marketing channels of the products elaborated by artisans that inhabit the rural and indigenous areas, to integrate them into the benefits of the domestic progress, economically and socially speaking. FONART was constituted in 1974 and since 1995, it was taken under supervision of the Social Development Ministry.

Mission

FONART wants to support the artisans from Mexico to contribute to the improvement of their quality of life and to preserve the values of their traditional culture, linking the artisans creativity with the final customer by supportive programs and effective marketing strategies that assure the positioning of quality artisan products in the domestic and international markets.

Vision

To be the federal government organism able to improve the lifestyle of Mexican artisans, designing and executing long term activities based on the invigoration of individual and community abilities of the artisans that allow them the consistent generation of economic resources.

Objectives

To support the artisans from Mexico that preserve technical and traditional designs and that live under poverty conditions, to help improve their abilities, through the financing and the stimulus of the creativity by means of technical support. To develop new designs and to promote effective commercial strategies that will allow an appropriate sale of their products.

Specific Objectives

To improve the conditions of life of the traditional artisans, improving their skills in production and sustainable development of the commercial activity of their products. To maintain the self employment sources and to offer a larger income to the popular traditional artisans, by means of technical support actions to improve the quality and the characteristics of their production, acquisition of crafts and stimuli the production by means of crafts competitions and the grant of credits for the support of technical and financially viable production cycles. To foment, in coordination with the government, the artistic and cultural sense of the popular crafts as a fundamental element of the traditional identity and to generate new product trends. To qualify and guide the artisans in order that new designs are developed using the traditional elements of our culture.
